Every once in a while I meet customers who tell with regret that they couldn’t find the prescription for their current glasses. This is not usually a problem, as the power can be measured with a so called refractive index meter designed particularly for this task.
Measuring can pose some problems if we’re dealing with multipower glasses or special type of computer glasses.
This is why you should always take the documents about your old glasses with you if you can find them.

You should never hide the power of your previous glasses
Sometimes, people may think that an optician or eye specialist makes a more thorough check if you don’t give the information about your previous glasses. This is not true, as it is certain that all customers are checked as thoroughly no matter if they or have not the info about the power of the previous glasses with them.
If the power is known, it is easy to tell the customer how the vision has changed and how long does it take to get used to the new glasses.
As you surely admit, we do not go to see a doctor without revealing what our diagnosis is to see if the new doctor finds out the same.
It may sound ridiculous that someone would hide the power of their previous glasses, but this does happen from time to time.
Always take your old glasses to the sight test
Sometimes, a customer may come to an optician’s and tell that the old glasses are in such a bad condition that it was no use bringing them along. Even if this would be the case, you should bring the glasses with you as the optician or an eye specialist may receive valuable information about them.
As a summary, I recommend you to always take all the information you possess about the state of your eyes and about the glasses you have with you when you visit an optician’s. Information about possible medication is also important. I have written an article about this topic called Why is an optician interested in your diagnosed diseases and medication.
Please note that the advice and tips given in this blog are based on Finnish regulations and laws. Therefore, you need to verify the regulations and laws in your country from your own optician, optometrist or eye specialist.
